2012 Custom Westergard Tancook Schooner

location icon Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada
Year 2012
Length 48'0 ft / 14.63 m
Price
C$75,000

Designed and ably built by David Westergard at the Dory Shop. Her sistership is in Maine – the MARTHA SEABURY.

She is a fine vessel indeed. The Dory Shop is very proud of her. She is extraordinarily solid, of the best materials, and her sister ship is swift. She needs an owner to finish her up and go to sea. Properly finished and outfitted she could sail anywhere. There are no material hull defects.

This vessel is hull, deck, rudder, ext ballast. We have some spars and sails as well. There is a traditional gaff-rig sail plan drawn up but the new owner might choose something else.

She could be bought and moved to another facility for completion, or if preferred, she can be bought and finished where she is with an agreement with the Dory Shop. There are a number of great boat builders around the South Shore of Nova Scotia who would do an excellent job. I do not seek to keep that job in house. Whatever the customer wishes.

She is situated east and west at the Dory Shop to make it easy for a boat lifter to come and take her.

Additional Information

This sister hull to the Schooner Martha Seabury, launched in August 2012, is complete from an exterior perspective – painted, decked, with deck structures (scuttle entrance forward, midships skylight and after cabin trunk) in place – however, she is unfinished belowdecks. This was a purposeful decision on our part as we know that anyone investing in a boat of this scale and inherent craftsmanship deserves the custom interior that fits their sailing plans and dreams.

Only the finest materials were used: White oak, tropical hard-woods, copper and bronze fastenings, not to mention the fine craftsmanship for which Lunenburg and Nova Scotia are known.

This price is based on the scenario where a purchaser buys the hull and takes her away for completion elsewhere. For the purpose of clarity, the above price includes the hull completed with decks, deck structures, rudder, cockpit and ballast; caulked and painted.

Completion of the hull can be handled in a few ways: the hull can be taken away and completed elsewhere (as mentioned above); the hull can be completed by us; the hull can be completed where the hull currently sits by a builder of your choice whom you employ directly.

Builders Comments

The twin Schooner lays under cover at the Dory Shop in Lunenburg Nova Scotia. She is lined up toe be easy to move with a Brownell type lifter to another site at one of the several outstanding outfits hereabouts for finishing off – or to anywhere else for whatever reason. Or she could be finished at the Dory Shop. There are several fine wooden boat operations in the area that could an excellent job of rigging the vessel and finishing her off ready for sea to the owner’s tastes.

Sale of the schooner at The Dory Shop is not contingent on our finishing her at the Dory Shop. We would be happy to refer the new owner to area boat builders who would all do a great job. Old Towne Boat Works, Blue Rocks Timber Framing, Lutwick Boat Building in Mahone Bay, Dagley Boat Works, Tern Boats Works in Gold River and the Le Have River near by. David Westergard who built the boat could finish her off as well. Or she could be taken to any number of fine boat building operations near or far.

She is 48’ long and built to a very high standard of the best materials and stout enough for any ocean voyaging, swift enough for sweet sailing on the weekend and just fine for coastwise cruising as well. She is in perfect condition and, in fact, her timbers are even more seasoned than any other wooden schooner in her class. Hull, deck, main deck structures, rudder, cockpit, fixed external lead ballast all complete. Some spars, all sails, possible standing rigging on hand if the new owner so wishes. If reproducing the original rig, these would be useful. If alternative choices are made, maybe not. It is important the new owner gets what he or she wants, not to get stuck on existing materials.
