2012 Custom Westergard Tancook Schooner

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada

C$75,000

Designed and ably built by David Westergard at the Dory Shop. Her sistership is in Maine – the MARTHA SEABURY.

She is a fine vessel indeed. The Dory Shop is very proud of her. She is extraordinarily solid, of the best materials, and her sister ship is swift. She needs an owner to finish her up and go to sea. Properly finished and outfitted she could sail anywhere. There are no material hull defects.

This vessel is hull, deck, rudder, ext ballast. We have some spars and sails as well. There is a traditional gaff-rig sail plan drawn up but the new owner might choose something else.

She could be bought and moved to another facility for completion, or if preferred, she can be bought and finished where she is with an agreement with the Dory Shop. There are a number of great boat builders around the South Shore of Nova Scotia who would do an excellent job. I do not seek to keep that job in house. Whatever the customer wishes.

She is situated east and west at the Dory Shop to make it easy for a boat lifter to come and take her.

Construction

Hull/Deck:

Materials : The hull is planked with 1 3/4” thick Alaska Yellow Cedar on
3” sided x 3” moulded Osage Orange doubled / sawn frames at 4’ 0” centres and 3” steamed white oak intermediate frames at roughly 16” centres,

fastened with bronze screws & ring nails and with copper roves.

The centreline structure ( stem, forefoot, keel, stern post and horn timber ) are made of tropical hardwood and white oak, fastened with silicon bronze bolts.

The external ballast is a single lead casting of 11,000 pounds, attached to the keel by 14 x 1” diameter silicon bronze bolts.

The deck is a traditionally laid and caulked deck on sawn larch deck beams The cockpit well is fabricated of moulded fiberglass.

The hull’s exterior has been prime painted white.

Additional Information

This sister hull to the Schooner Martha Seabury, launched in August 2012, is complete from an exterior perspective – painted, decked, with deck structures (scuttle entrance forward, midships skylight and after cabin trunk) in place – however, she is unfinished belowdecks. This was a purposeful decision on our part as we know that anyone investing in a boat of this scale and inherent craftsmanship deserves the custom interior that fits their sailing plans and dreams.

Only the finest materials were used: White oak, tropical hard-woods, copper and bronze fastenings, not to mention the fine craftsmanship for which Lunenburg and Nova Scotia are known.

This price is based on the scenario where a purchaser buys the hull and takes her away for completion elsewhere. For the purpose of clarity, the above price includes the hull completed with decks, deck structures, rudder, cockpit and ballast; caulked and painted.

Completion of the hull can be handled in a few ways: the hull can be taken away and completed elsewhere (as mentioned above); the hull can be completed by us; the hull can be completed where the hull currently sits by a builder of your choice whom you employ directly.
